Things to think about before staining a wood floor
Staining your wood floor is a serious business. After all, the colour of a room’s floor can seriously affect that room’s overall aesthetic. Here at The Floor Sanding Experts, we’re passionate about helping people get the most out of their wood floors. That’s why, if you’re currently considering staining your floor, we’re proud to offer you our expert advice. We tackled the subject of how to decide on your preferred stain colour in a previous blog. Today, however, we’d like to look at the more objective, concrete factors that affect which stain colours you can apply to a room’s floor.
1. The size of the room
Dark colours can give larger rooms a stately, highly-refined appearance, but they can also make smaller rooms appear cramped or claustrophobic. In contrast, light colours can make any room appear both friendlier and more spacious. However, they aren’t really necessary for larger rooms and may make them feel a little too empty and oversized. In general, dark stain colours suit larger rooms and light colour suit smaller ones.
2. Regularity of cleaning
Light colours have a very bright, pure look. If you want to create a luminous, clean-looking room, lighter stain colours are ideal. However, even small quantities of dust and dirt tend to be very visible against light colours. Ergo, it’s only advisable to opt for light stain colours if you can clean your wood floor daily. In comparison, darker colours tend not to show dirt and dust. As a result, darker stains are ideal if you want to keep your wood floor looking tidy but don’t have the time to clean it every single day.
3. The purpose of the room
Colours have a huge psychological impact. When used to decorate a room, darker colours tend to engender a more sombre, introspective mood. Darker stains are therefore ideal for studies and similar rooms. They can also be used in bedrooms to create a quiet and understated look that some people find conducive to a good night’s sleep. Lighter colours, however, tend to create feelings of liveliness and energy. As a result, lighter stains are great for living rooms and other rooms where socialisation may take place.
Whatever colour of stain you decide on, we can apply it for you. In addition to offering floor sanding, we at Floor Sanding Specialists provide a variety of other services including staining, waxing and even wood floor repair. Get in touch to find out more.
